Thank you for having me at your wellness activity. I know there was a ton of information shared today and the great thing is you don’t have to remember anything we talked to still get the benefits from Yoga Nidra & meditation… and in the least, you might get some moments of rest.
Below is a Yoga Nidra if you want to try it. I will add another shorter one this week.
Before you get started, I wrote down a few suggestions for setting up & addressed common questions that arise after:
If possible, practice lying down on your back, palms facing up
Avoid practicing in your bed, so that your mind does not associate the practice with sleep (if you want to use it for sleep, you can practice in bed)
Some people prefer a dark place or fabric over the eyes to block the light; also, when possible find a space with minimal loud or unexpected noises [sudden noise can pull you out of the practice]
You'll want to be as comfortable as possible to remain still for the entire time, blankets underneath the body or lie on rug to soften the floor
Blanket or pillow under the back of your head to keep neck neutral with spine
Body temperature can drop, so blanket over body or warm sweater & clothing
If you need support for your lower back, rolled up towel or blanket or pillow behind your knees or knees bent & souls of your feet to the floor
If you are pregnant, find a reclined position against a wall, using cushioning beneath you for comfort or take it lying on your side or in bed
You can listen through headphones or speaker
Practice anytime of the day. Mornings are great to start the day off, midday “nap” or wind down in the evening. The best time is the time you can actually do it.
When you come out of the practice, know all experiences are normal. There is no wrong way to practice Yoga Nidra. Some people might feel tired or super awake an hour later, some people relax so much they feel detached from their body [this is ok BUT if it feels scary to you, find a way to come back to your breath & body or have a safe place, person or object to bring your mind to], you might remember everything or only parts of it, coming in & out of consciousness.
There are times I practice Yoga Nidra & my mind feels very awake & alert. Just because I haven’t drifted into that dreamy state does not mean I am not experiencing the benefits. My thoughts can be there but with practice, I move into a place where I am just watching them as opposed to being caught up in them.
If nothing else, FIND YOUR MEDITATION… something that brings you fully into what you are doing in the present moment & out of the worries & fluctuations of our human experience
